He was the son of William H. Alford. Roy drowned in Lake Monona. He and a girlfriend were in their ice boat when it fell through weakened ice. The runners of their iceboat sliced through the thin ice. Roy's girlfriend was rescued; however, Roy was found about 30 minutes after the rescue in ten feet of water. He was tangled in the boat's rigging and sail. Rescuers tried reviving Roy for one hour. Documents from the time period indicated that he was "a youth universally loved by his fellows. He was generous, genial and his habits were model." He died at the age of 17 years 8 months 25 days.
