Complications After Surgery Prove Fatal

Services for Mayor Sell Boyd Bridges, 62, of Winona, were conducted here at 2 p.m. Saturday December 13, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. C. B Hamlet, III, of Hattiesburg, the Rev. David Cranford of Canton and the Rev. John Green, local pastor, officiating.

Interment was in Oakwood Cemetery with aldermen of the City of Winona and deacons of the First Baptist Church acting as pallbearers. Lee Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mayor Bridges died suddenly Thursday night, December 11, from complications following surgery at Greenwood Leflore Hospital in Greenwood.

The son of the late William M. Bridges and Frances Ray Bridges, who moved to Winona from Poplar Creek about 35 years ago, the deceased had been a former insurance agent and justice of the peace for Beat One prior to serving as Mayor of the City of Winona for the past five years.

He was directly instrumental in locating here McGregor's Windon Manufacturing Company, one of Winona's largest industries, and was active in civic and church affairs.

Mr. Bridges was a deacon, Sunday School and Training Union officer and choir member in the First Baptist Church. He was a member of the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, the Masons and Eastern Star. A veteran of World War I, he had held offices in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was born May 1, 1896.

Surviving him are: his wife, Mrs. Velma McClure Bridges, to whom he was married in January of 1918; a daughter, Mrs. Marshall Hemphill, Grenada; a son, Henry Carthel Bridges, Canton; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Barnhill of Starkville and Mrs. Clarence Chesteen of French Camp; a brother, Lee Bridges of Winona; and three grandchildren, Marsha Hemphill of Grenada, and Dinah and Roy Bridges of Canton.
