His Indiana Certificate of Death with a third party as the informant has October 10, 1844 as the date of his birth. The book, History of Northeast Indiana: LaGrange, Steuben, Noble and DeKalb Counties published in 1920 while he was still living has October 19, 1844.

He was the son of John A. Matson and Margaret Waterman Matson.
On March 4, 1867 as Lewis I. Matson, he married Orcelia R. Clark at Steuben County, Indiana.
They were the parents of four children.
On August 12, 1906 as Lewis I. Matson, he married Ada C. Shackford, widow of Charles A. Shackford at Steuben County, Indiana.
They had no children.

Lewis Matson, who spent his life in Northeastern Indiana, represents one of the pioneer families of DeKalb County and his own active career has been spent chiefly in Steuben County, where for upwards of half a century he has been a practical and progressive farmer and today owns one of the best farms in the vicinity of Pleasant Lake. He was born in DeKalb County October 19, 1844, a grandson of Elijah Matson and a son of John Matson.

Lewis Matson grew up on the old homestead six miles south of Hamilton in DeKalb County, attended public schools and also had a year of instruction in Cornell College in Iowa. He was a teacher for two terms and in 1867 came to Steuben Township, locating at Pleasant Lake. On March 4, 1867 he married Miss Orcelia R. Clark, who was born in Steuben County March 1, 1845, a daughter of Dr. Alonzo P. and Betsey (Bump) Clark. The Clark family were pioneers of Steuben owned about 600 acres of land in Steuben Township.

After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Matson located on a part of the Clark homestead and after a few years he started the first hardware store in the Village of Pleasant Lake and continued the business for twelve years. He then took up general merchandising with the firm of Chadwick & Ransburg and was associated with those merchants for twelve years. He then resumed farming and has a place of 300 acres a mile north of Pleasant Lake and is successfully engaged in general crop raising and livestock. Mr. Matson has for twenty-five years been an active prohibitionist and in early life was affiliated with the Republican Party. He was trustee of Steuben Township. Mr. Matson and his wife are Baptist and he has been affiliated with that church for forty years.

Mr. and Mrs. Matson had four children. Clark A.P. is an attorney in Chicago. James L., is connected with the shipping department of the Overland Automobile Works at Toledo. Mabel is the wife of Henry G. Brown of Lebanon, Indiana. The youngest is John O. Matson. The mother of these children died January 29, 1906. On August 12, 1906, Mr. Matson married Ada (Clark) Shackford, widow of Charles A. Shackford.

Funeral services for the late Lewis I. Matson, of Pleasant Lake, were held from the Baptist church in that place at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon, the Rev. E.A. Kelford and Rev. Manors, pastor of the church, officiating. Burial took place in the old Clark Cemetery north of Pleasant Lake, Indiana.
Mr. Matson had been in failing health for several years, following a fall that he had when he suffered an injury to his spine. His death came on Wednesday morning of last week, following a stroke of paralysis which he suffered on Saturday before.
Mr. Matson was one of a family ten children, the son of the late Elijah Matson, who came from Vermont and settled in Franklin township in 1835, where the son Lewis was born. His mother was a daughter of the late Hon. Elijah Waterman and a sister of late Hon. Miles Waterman. He grew to manhood in this vicinity and spent considerable time in Waterloo until he reached the age of twenty-one when he was united in marriage to Miss Orcelia Clark of Steuben County. He then located at Pleasant Lake where he entered the hardware business. Later he became associated with the late Frank Chadwick in mercantile business in that place and was bookkeeper for the firm. Later, he retired from business activities and engaged in farming near Pleasant Lake for some years until he retired from active work.
Mr. and Mrs. Matson had four children, Clark of Chicago, James and John Matson of Pleasant Lake, Mrs. Mabel Brown, who lived at home with her father during his declining days. Mrs. Matson died a number years ago. Mr. Matson was a man of high ideals, well thought of and possessed a very keen intellect. He a member of the Baptist church and was active in his church affiliations until the end.
