During the Confederate Invasion of Pennsylvania in the June-July 1863 Gettysburg Campaign, he enlisted as a Private in Company E, 51st Pennsylvania Militia regiment, and served from July 3, 1863 to September 2, 1863.
He rejoined the Union war effort a third time when he enlisted in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Cavalry on December 31, 1863, and was mustered in as a Private in Company E on January 4, 1864 (New Jersey Adjutant General records lists his name as "George H. Blakeley). He served through the end of the war, and was honorably mustered out on August 1, 1865.
In 1869 he filed for a United States Army Pension (Application #23323, Certificate #141241).
On September 14, 1907 his wife, Emma J. Bakely, applied for a United States Army Widow's Pension (Application #876364, Certificate #641152).
