Esther J. Nickel, 62, died Wednesday (May 17, 2000) at Kidron Bethel Health Care in North Newton.
She was born June 9, 1937, in Enid, Okla., to Fred E. and Mary E. (Koons) Koehn. She married Samuel J. Nickel Dec. 29, 1961, in Newton. He preceded her in death June 8, 1988.
She graduated from high school at Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid, Okla. She attended Grace University in Omaha, Neb. After graduating from a three year general Bible course, she attended Sterling College.
She and her husband lived in Juneau, Alaska, moving to Newton in 1988. She was a file clerk at Mutual of Omaha in Omaha, Neb. She helped with bookkeeping for her husband's construction company and at a dry cleaning business. From 1989 to 1993 she worked for Len and Flo's Kitchen and for many years she had done housekeeping for Klean Korners in Newton. She was dietary aide at Kidron Bethel Retirement Service in North Newton for the past six years.
She enjoyed music and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a member of Newton Bible Church.
Survivors include: two sons, Galen Nickel and Jerrel Nickel, both of Snohomish, Wash.; one daughter, Shelly Roth of Lodi, Wis.; three brothers, Adolph Koehn of Newton, Martin Koehn of Rio Linda, Calif., and Abner Koehn of Jackson, Tenn.; one sister, Dahna Regier of Elbing; and three grandchildren.
She also was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were Wednesday at Newton Bible Church with Pastors Ted Veer and Bill Regier officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials have been established with Newton Bible Church and Kidron Bethel Retirement Services in care of the funeral home.
