Stephen John Reilly

Stephen Reilly and his brother Patrick Reilly were members of the IRA Volunteer Brigade who attacked, and burnt down, The Custom House, Dublin, on 25 May 1921.
The exercise was a military fiasco. The volunteers were ill equipped and the action was poorly planned. The authorities were informed of it within minutes of it starting and surrounded the building.
The building burnt down, supposedly due to the tactical inactivity of the Dublin Fire Brigade.
5 Volunteers were killed,
James Connolly,
Edward Christopher Dorins,
Daniel Head,
Patrick Thomas Reilly
Stephen John Reilly
80-100 Volunteers were captured
4 Civilians were killed, John Byrne, James Connolly, Mahon Lawless,
7 wounded, mainly civil servants
4 Crown Forces (RIC Auxiliaries) wounded
It has been claimed that the raid was the idea of Eamonn De Valera who wanted to stage "a spectacular", and was opposed by Michael Collins.

Birth.
Stephen John Reilly, son of Thomas Reilly (deceased) and Sidney Annie Reilly, formerly Masterson, was born on 13 July 1901, at 3 Wellesley Place, Dublin
His father had been a Printer.

Death.
Stephen John Reilly, aged 19, a Traveller, died on 25 May 1921, at The Custom House, Dublin.
The cause of death was "Shock and Haemorrhage caused by bullets fired by Crown Forces in the execution of their duty. Justifiable Homicide".
His death was registered on 22 June 1921 on foot of a Certificate received from a Military Court of Inquiry held on 27 May 1921
