Albert Haskins was born in 1842 in Tinmouth, Vermont to Aaron Haskins and Caroline Goodspeed. He moved to Park Ridge, Illinois, with his parents and 2 sisters 1843/1846. After his father died and his mother remarried, he became the only boy in a houseful of 7 girls. Perhaps this is why he enlisted in the army at age 18. At the beginning of the war he enlisted in Battery C, Chicago Light Artillery, under Captain Richard Busteed. Within three months this unit disbanded due to the poor health of the Captain. Many of the men, including Albert, were transfered to Battery G, 1st Regiment NY Light Artillery. He was sick when he joined the unit, and continued to worsen. It was decided he had Tuberculosis, so he received a medical discharge on 8 Jan 1862 and was sent home. He died two months later. He is listed in the Cook County Roll of Honor as a deceased soldier. His old, broken tombstone was recently replaced.
