Rose Gladine (Thompson) Kirkwood, 94, of Kittanning, died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at her home. She was born Sept. 20, 1912, a daughter of the late Charles A. and Florence A. (Frick) Thompson and was a life long resident of the area. Mrs. Kirkwood was born and raised in West Kittanning. She attended West Kittanning School, Kittanning High School and Indiana State Teachers College. She taught first grade in West Kittanning for eight years. Mrs. Kirkwood was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Kittanning for well over 75 years. She taught Sunday school and served on various church boards. She also was a member of the Eastern Star and was a past matron. Rose was also an active member of the Armstrong County Memorial Hospital Medical Auxiliary and spent many years volunteering at the hospital's snack bar. After her husband's death in 1975, she worked as a teller at Merchants National Bank for several years. Rose's bright smile and thoughtfulness have touched the lives of many people in our community. A fitting tribute to her would be to carry on her tradition. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Lee Lorigan and her husband Larry G.; her granddaughter, Erin L. Spang and James P. Futscher and children, Noah and Liam Spang and Alexa Futscher; her grandson, Kirk T. Lorigan and wife, Devin, and children, Madisyn Rose and Maci Ray, all of Kittanning; her nephew, R. Terry Thompson and wife Donna and children, Terri Lynn and fiance, Ryan Eller, and Courtney Rose Nagle and husband, Joe, of Girard, Pa.; her nephew, C. Ben Thompson and wife, Ann, of Raleigh, N.C., and children Mark and Ann; her nephew, Tom Thompson; nieces, Donna Kirkwood and Delores Croyle; and her nephew, Dr. Keith K. Buck and wife, Sally. She is also survived by several great-nieces and -nephews; her close friend, Margaret Mortimer; and many of her former first-graders from West Kittanning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Turney L. Kirkwood; her sister, Margaret and husband, Richard Evertts; and her brother, Carl Thompson. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at SNYDER-CRISSMAN FUNERAL HOME, Kittanning. Additional visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until time of services at 11 a.m. Friday in the First Baptist Church in Kittanning with the Rev. A. David Meneely, of First Baptist Church, officiating. Interment in Lawn Haven Burial Estates.
