Parentage is unclear. Joseph was born to Emeline Millen while John was still married to his first wife Mary Ann (who also had a baby in 1873). 1880 Census lists Elnora Millen and Joseph Nichols as John Nichols' step-children. Subsequent records list Joseph as John Nichols' son. Unclear if John is actually his father due to an affair, or if his biological father is someone else. A birth record with matching name, city & date of birth lists Jos T. & Sarah E. Nichols as the parents. His death cert lists both parents as unknown.

Married Ethel Dodge on Jun 17, 1896. They divorced in May 1919.

They had 8 children together, Walter, Hugh, Algene, Theodore, Helen (Sheehan), Doris (Underwood), Joseph Jr, and Gladys (who died as a baby).

Remarried to Winnie (Crossett) George on Dec 6, 1919.
