Martha, daughter of Enos Harrelson & his 1st wife, Mary Grimes Brady of Covington County, AL, never married. She moved down to the Garden City area from Rose Hill, Covington AL, after her step-mother Sarah Catherine (Jones), 2nd wife of Enos, died in June 1900. She had been living with Sarah Catherine all her life, helping in taking care of things & the other 'children', as her father Enos Harrelson had told her to do. He was leaving to go fight in the civil war. She was told to "take care of the children for your mother until I get back..." She did what he bid, but he never came home, having been killed 19 Jul 1863. Martha then spent the rest of her life taking care of her younger siblings, doing just as her father had bid her do. This was told to me by my Gr-Aunt Mary Lee Hicks Josey, Martha's gr-niece... as her 'Aunt Marthy' had told it to her.

Aunt Mary Lee said she remembered, "the day Mommar & Popper & us came down from Covington County in the wagon, no cover, just a wagon pulled by a mule & was coming up to the 'big house' where a 'large' woman was standing on the porch & had asked her momma (Josey Lee Harrelson Hicks) "who the fat lady was?", to which her momma had said, "that's your Gr-Aunt Marthy & this is her big house where we're going to stay with her." Martha's half-sister Mary Joyce, who also never married, resided with her, known to all down here, as "Aunt Joicey". Riding with Gussie & Josey Lee Hicks, was Josey's sister, Martha Frances Lou Anna Harrelson, who also never married. "Aunt Anner" as she was called by us all, named after her Aunt Martha, of whom she was now, again, going to be living with. "So, they all lived together in the big house.", was the last statement by Gr-Aunt Mary Lee.

Gussie Hicks & Josey Lee Harrelson were my gr-grandparents, and were still residing in Martha's "big house", out in the woods near Lake Silver, just outside of Crestviw, in 1966, the last time I saw Gr-Grandpa Gussie before he died in 1967.

Gr-Aunt Mary Lee had also told me little tale of embarrassment for her Gr-Aunt Martha. I can't remember exactly when she said it happened, but Gr-Aunt Mary Lee said that while Martha was still 'up home' with Sarah Catherine & children, in Rose Hill, there had been a fire in their house. Martha had woke up and hollered to everyone of the fire. She and the others ran out of the house, including her one brother that ran out without his britches on. "He always slept nude", Gr-Aunt Mary Lee said, in a side-tone. "So, there he was, standing out in the middle of the yard, buck naked and embarrassed Martha so bad she couldn't look at him."

Gr-Aunt Mary Lee, chuckling while telling me of the embarrassment of her aunt, who was a spinster her whole life, and that seeing her brother buck naked in the yard was the first, and the last time, that Martha saw a 'man' naked. [I can't remember for certainty, but I believe Gr-Aunt Mary Lee said it was Billy (William Pleasant "Billy" Harrelson].

Martha Harrelson, half-aunt to my grandmother, Josey Lee Harrelson Hicks.
