Henry H[arrison] Strought was born in Cumberland County and married Margaret E. Brooks in 1863. Their known children were Elleda [?] (b. @1861), Annie E. (b. 03/20/65 - married a Wissinger), Sarah Jane (b. @1866), Harry & Mary E. (b.
02/??/69), and George W. (b. 1879). He was likely living in Perry County in 1860, and he definitely stood 5' 5" tall and had light hair and blue eyes. He worked for the railroad most of his adult life, which is why he wound up in Altoona. A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 16, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 18 as a private with Co. F, 201st Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company June 23, 1865. His reported years of birth are many and varied. He gave 22 as his age when he enlisted, which would make his birth year c. 1842. The 1900 census claims he was born June 1844, and you have 1840, which his stated age at death would seem to confirm. However, he had no reason to understate his age at enlistment but every reason to inflate it in post-1902 pension applications so as to appear as old as possible to obtain an increase in payment earlier. This age variance was extremely common among Civil War veterans.
