“Miles and Minerva Fawcett Pearson-
Miles Pearson, son of William and Esther Pearson, was born near New Castle, Henry County, Indiana on April 15, 1833. His boyhood days were spent helping his father on the farm. In March of 1856 he left his home and traveled by railroad to Iowa City, Iowa, the “farthest” west point on the railroad. The only railroad in Iowa at that time was a line from Davenport to Iowa City, a distance of about 50 miles. He traveled by stage coach from Iowa City to Colfax, Iowa from where he walked to Peoria City, Iowa. At this time Des Moines was a small town and the only way of crossing the Des Moines River there was a pontoon bridge. Miles selected an unimproved parcel of land near Peoria City. He returned to his Indiana home in July and reported the great opportunities to be had in Iowa. His father sold his farm and prepared to move west.
Miles was married on September 10, 1856 to Minerva Fawcett, by Rev. Robinson in Green County, Ohio. On September 16, 1886 Miles and his bride and his father and family left Indiana by wagon train for their new Iowa home in Washington Township, Polk County. He paid $2.50 an acre for his land and $5.00 an acre for some land purchased later.
He built a log cabin with one window and the door covered with skunk skins. They had a chair, a bed, a few cooking utensils, some pewter and scarcely anything else.
Miles and Minerva had three children; Addison, Junius, and Esther (Carpenter). When his sons were able to help with the farming, Miles bought a 300 acre farm near Maxwell, Iowa. They cleared the land and used a wooden plow and a team of oxen to break the sod.
Later he left his sons to do the farming and Miles and Minerva moved to Des Moines, Iowa where they opened a hotel, The Pearson House, which he operated for several years. Their only transportation between the farm and Des Moines was by wagon. In later years they returned to Maxwell, Iowa where they lived.
Addison Pearson married Florence Case and they had six children, Harley, Merlie (Mrs. Howard Couch), Ned Addison, Frank, Carole and Helen.
Harley married Mable Hibbard and they had three children, Zea (Mrs. C. Martin), Zenda (Mrs. K. Meyers) and Miles.
Merlie married Howard Couch and they had one daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Ned marred Laura Scott and they had on daughter, Phyllis (Mrs. Richard Shackelford). Ned and Laura live and farmed near Maxwell. Ned died in 1967 and Laura lives at Long Term Care at Nevada, Iowa. Phyllis and her husband live in California and they have three sons. Frank Pearson married Bernice Kennedy and they had three children, Martha Elaine (Mrs. Harold Hopkins), Shirley Allynn (Cartwright) and Frank Ray.
Esther, the daughter of Miles and Minerva, taught school in Des Moines and later became a nurse. She was married to W. Carpenter, a Civil War Veteran. He died at an early age. [*** see note] Etta, as she was called, resigned her position as Superintendent of Nursing at the Methodist Hospital to take her mother and father into her home where she cared for them until their deaths in 1924 and 1928.
Miles served several years as a Story County Supervisor and twice voted for Abraham Lincoln for president.”
