Elizabeth "Bettie" Bell was the daughter of Joseph Bell and Elizabeth Henderson. She married Docr Jno Johnston, on 16 Sep 1794 in Augusta Co., Virginia. Rev. Wm Wilson officiated. The Bell Family of America, 1913, p 19, listed her parents.

Per the Augusta Co., Virginia Marriage Records, 1785-1813 (alphabetized) on Film # 007578826 lists "Sep 1794, John Johnston and Eliz Bell." On Familysearch 39/351 (see photo).

Elizabeth and John had known Johnston children:

"The will of Dr. John Johnston devises the property to his wife Elizabeth, February 5, 1845. His sons, Joseph and George, are appointed executors. The will of Elizabeth Johnston reserves the family burial ground, September 6, 1856."

On the 1850 Dist. 57, Roanoke, Virginia census, I found ELIZBETH Johnston, age 73 (abt 1877) with $25K in real estate; farmer John M Johnston, 41 (abt 1809); Margaret M Johnston, 33; John H Johnston, 9; Mariah Johnston, 4 and Elizabeth Johnston, 1, all Virginia born.

On the 1860 Roanoke, Virginia census, I found farmer ELIZABETH Johnston, age 84 so born abt 1776 (Ancestry lists age 24), with $40K i real estate and $29K in personal property; Margaret Johnston, 40; student John Johnston, 13; Elizabeth Johnston, 12; Marin/Marie? Johnston, 15; Charles Johnston, 10 and Ellen Johnston, 7, all Virginia born. They lived next to grandson David Shanks, 34 and his family.

"Bettie" Bell Johnston, along with Dr. John Johnston of Roanoke, were the grand parents of Helen Galloway Johnston. Per the History of Roanoke County, by George S Jack, 1912, p 39.

Based on her 1856 written will, reserving the family burial ground, I see no reason, why she was not buried here. Elizabeth's burial place is undocumented. One undocumented source says she she was born 21 Dec 1775 - verify. I suspect she is buried here, without a marker.

She died before the (usually quarterly) August term of the Roanoke Circuit Court in 1866 (see below).

Valuable Roanoke Land For Sale. - In pursuance of a decree prounounce by the Circuit Court of Roanoke, at the AUGUST TERM, 1866, in a Chancery cause therein pending between David C Shanks, executor of Mrs. ELIZABETH JOHNSTON, DEC'D plaintiff, and the heirs and distributes of Mrs. Elizabeth Johnston and of Dr. John Johnston, defendants, the undersigned, who were appointed Commissioners for that purpose, will offer for sale on the premises, to the highest bidder, on Thursday, the 29th day of November, 1866, that very VALUEABLE FARM, in the county of Roanoke, formerly owned and occupied by Dr. Johnston, dec'd, containing the whole, One Thousand, One Hundred and Sixty-five acres, but which will be divided so as to make 3 valuable farms of 3 to 4 hundred acres each. The improvements are a Dwelling House, Barn, and other Out-Houses. Near the dwelling is one of the finest Springs in the county, besides which there are other good Springs and sites for building. About 200 acres of the above lands lie immediately on Roanoke river, and are of the highest value. A large portion of the residue is fine upland, well adapted to grain and grass. Being within a mile of Salem Depot, on the Virginia & Tennessee railroad, and vrery near the flourishing town of Salem, with its churches, good male and female schools, and superior advantages of soil and climate, the property now offered for sale is of the most desirable character. TERMS.-A credit of one and two years will be given, (except as to a sum in money sufficient to defray the expenses of sale,) the purchaser giving bonds with good security, and the title will be retained until the purchase money is paid.

D.C. SHANKS, F. JOHNSTON, Commissioners. sep18--tds

Lynchburg Virginian (tri-weekly) and Staunton Spectator will copy tds and send bill to Commissioners for collection.-Roanoke Times. Per the Staunton Spectator (Virginia) dated 18 Sep, 2, 23 & 30 Oct, 6 Nov 1866, page 3 (see photo, in public domain).

She was not found under Elizabeth or Bettie Johnston on the transcribed list of deaths in Roanoke Co., nor in Augusta or Rockbridge Co., Virginia. Also could not locate an obit for Elizabeth, Bettie or Betty, Bell, John Johnston or Johnston, in the Roanoke Times, and the Staunton and Lexington, Virginia papers at the Library of Congress and Library of Virginia. Perhaps a local Roanoke Library may have old 1866 obits.
