Ellen Lowry
Ellen Bernice Lowry, a longtime resident of Wilton died July 11, 2014 at the age of 81.

On Oct. 30, 1933 Edgar and Dona Steed welcomed their fourth child into this world and named her Ellen Bernice Steed. Ellen grew up in rural Winston County, Miss., and was valedictorian of her high school class. She left the farm in 1952 and became a telephone operator for Southern Bell in the little town of Leland, Miss.

In 1955 she met George Lowry who was about to complete pilot training at nearby Greenville Air Force Base. After a whirlwind courtship (two weeks and one date) they married on Feb. 5, 1955. Ellen accompanied her husband all over the country for the next 20 years that he served in the Air Force.

Upon George’s retirement they moved onto a small farm in Wilton where they lived for 35 years. During this time Ellen drove a school bus for the Elk Grove Unified School District, became a certified instructor and finally moved inside as a dispatcher-supervisor. Upon her retirement from the school district they ventured into a new life, living full time in an RV and traveling through the entire continental U.S. and parts of Canada and Mexico.
She is survived by her spouse George Lowry; children Cheryl Kay Alonzo (Richard) of Sacramento, Cynthia Annette Bradberry (Reid) of Kuna, Idaho, and Michael Shawn Lowry (Lois) of Mountain Ranch; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, scattered from Sasebo, Japan to Groton, Conn.

Her body was donated to science at UC Davis and, said her family, “We all hope this will be able to help someone in the future.”

Ellen requested no memorial services; instead to have a party and drink lots of wine. Therefore the family is going to host a party in her honor at the Elk Grove Elks Lodge, 9240 Survey Road, on Saturday, Aug. 23 from 1 to 5 p.m. She specifically requested no flowers; instead make a donation to either the Alzheimer’s Society or the American Cancer Society. All of her friends and co-workers are invited to please come by and share a glass of wine and a snack.
