Clyde Bickers, 81, of Madison died Friday, Aug. 24, 2007, at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Ky.

He was born Sept. 14, 1925, in Sanders, Ky., the son of Omer B. and Margaret Spoonmore Bickers. He grew up in Carroll County, Ky., and moved to Jefferson County in the eighth grade. He received his 1945 Madison High School diploma three months ago under a provision in state law that allows World War II veterans who left school to serve in the military to be awarded their diplomas. He was a farmer and was also employed with Thompson Dairy, Reliance Electric, Williams Food Service and the Jefferson County Highway Department. He enjoyed farming, playing cards, bowling, softball, baseball and watching his grandchildren play softball. He coached Shawe and church league softball. He was a member of North Madison Baptist Church and the Madison Moose Lodge 765. He was first married to Phyllis J. Phagan on Aug. 25, 1947.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Howard Bickers, whom he married Oct. 10, 1998; two daughters, Marilyn Duncan and Joyce Bickers, both of Madison; three sons, the Rev. Dennis Bickers and Roger Bickers, both of Madison, and Don Bickers of Lawrenceville, Ill.; five stepdaughters, Janice Cart and Jean Kinyon of Madison, Arlene Austin of Indianapolis, Terry Hoffman of Lakeland, Fla., Karen Vaughn of Gainesville, Ga; one stepson, Roger Short of Indianapolis; 11 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; 10 step great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Phyllis J. Phagan Bickers, whom he married Aug. 25, 1947, and who died Nov. 30, 1996; one stepdaughter, Phyllis Sheldon, who died July 3, 1997; one step-granddaughter; four sisters, Gertrude Morris Osburne, Winnie Jorgenson, Delia Ogburn and Ruth Littrell; and two brothers, Jimmy Bickers and Bill Bickers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at North Madison Baptist Church. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Jefferson Post 9 of the American Legion.

Friends may call at Morgan & Nay Funeral Centre from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday and at North Madison Baptist Church on Monday from 9 a.m. until the service.
