She was born March 2, 1923 in Bethany, Mo., the daughter of Fred and Ruby Fern (Anthony) Tilley and spent most her life in Bethany. She attended Maryville State Teachers College and taught for a short time.
During World War II, she was employed by Kansas City Power and Light before returning to Bethany after her marriage. Martha Lou was a bookkeeper for JC Penney, Fordyce Implement and finally Cole and Myers, where she retired.
On July 15, 1945, she married Robert Lee Prather, Jr. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1982.
She also was preceded in death by her great-grandparents Sanford Merton Tilley and Lydia Ruanna Salmon Tilley; grandparents Oliver Pierce Tilley and Elizabeth E. Tilley; parents; brothers, Anthony Merton and Paul; cousin, Charles Youngman; and many brothers and sisters-in-law.
Survivors include a son, Barry (Mary Ann) Prather, Sammamish, Wash.; daughter, Brenda (Dugan) VanHoozer, Kansas City, Mo.; five grandchildren, Scott, Jill, Christina, Bryan, and Amy; nine great-grandchildren, Emily, Shelby, Kiley, Karley, Kenzie, Bobby, Sophia, Lily and Maya; two sisters-in-law: Lucille Glenn, Sawyer, Kan.; and Phyllis Underwood, Liberty, Mo.
The things in life that made her the happiest were being with family (especially her grandchildren during the holidays), her friends, membership in her sorority and the Daughters of the American Revolution, bridge club, the Christian Church where she served as secretary and treasurer, and being a caregiver to those in need.
She will be greatly missed and thought of often.
