John W. Wheeler was born and raised near the Concord Church where his family belonged. He was a Civil War veteran who served in the 6th Calvary Company H. John enrolled on October 19, 1861. He was honorably discharged Nov. 18, 1862 in Memphis TN, by reason of disability. He had hernia from being thrown from a horse. A strangulated hernia was cause of death. He had also lost one eye. John converted at the age of 33 and joined the M.E. Church at Bethel. His funeral services was conducted by the Rev. J.E. Brown. John married Lucretia A. McMahan on May 3, 1860 in Hamilton Co., IL. They had six children: Mary Elizabeth, Julia Ann Francis, William Benson, Nancy Harriet, John Andrew Douglas and Peoria Luncinda.
