Michel Houle married Geneviève Cartier on February 24, 1829 at St. Michael d'Yamaska. They had seven children. Following Geneviève's death in 1847, he married Marie Lataille on November 21, 1848 at St. Victoire-de-Sorel, Quebec, Canada. They had two children.
Following Marie's death in 1855, Michel Houle and his younger children emigrated to Minnesota. He was following his eldest child, Leocadie Houle, and her husband Francois La Motte, who had moved from Quebec to Minnesota in 1852, founding the town of Centerville.
Michel Houle settled first in the Duluth area, then he bought a farm near Centerville and moved there in about 1868. Michel and his son, John, opened a grocery and dry goods store in Centerville, which subsequent generations kept in business until 1987.
