I believe he's the farmer "John Hamburgher" listed on the 1850 census at Campbell Township in Jennings County with wife, Elizabeth and children Lewis, John and Joseph. Although that record states he and Elizabeth were born in Germany, if they were from the Alsace-Lorraine area of France, it was alternately occupied by Germany and France right up until WWII, which would explain the discrepancy. Everything else seems to fit.
John and Elizabeth appear again at Vernon on the 1860 census with children Louis, John Jr., and Mary; he is a merchant in that town.
After he retired, he moved to neighboring North Vernon, where he and his wife appear with their youngest son, George, on both the 1870 and 1880 census.
John died shortly after the latter census. Unfortunately, his death notice doesn't state where he was interred.

Mr. John McCarnan and Mr. John Hemberger have been weakly all winter and are confined to their rooms. Both these latter gentlemen are quite aged. --The Plain Dealer (North Vernon, Indiana); 22 Apr 1880
