Last Rites Held For Dave Bernier
Requiem High Mass was given Saturday July 1 at 10am in St. Cecilia's Catholic church for Damase (Dave) Bernier. Fr Robert Joynt officiated. Mrs Justin Foley presided at the organ and Mrs L Sweeney and Mrs L T Hickey had charge of the flowers. Interment in the Catholic cemetery.
Pallbearers were six grandsons - Jerry, David and Tim Roth of Hartley; Edward Bernier, Phoenix, Arizona, LeRoy Bernier, Everly and Jim Rice of Marion, Ohio.
Mr Bernier was born at Centerville (Anoka County) Minnesota, September 9, 1869, the son of John Bernier and Stephanie Rivard DuFresne.
He attended school near his home and later a business school in St Paul.
In early manhood he came to Salix where he met Miss Adelina Foisy and they married January 8, 1900.
In 1909 the family moved to Sanborn and farmed two years north of town. They then moved to town and it has been their home ever since. In 1920 they moved to their present home on east second street.
Mr Bernier was employed at the round house for many years. He also ran a dray and worked at Ed Barker's cream station.
In 1950 the Berniers celebrated their Golden Anniversary. In 1960 they again held open house on their wedding day. Their last last anniversary was not observed as Mrs Bernier was in the Sheldon hospital.
Two years ago this fall Mr and Mrs Bernier visited Centerville and he called on his school teacher, who was 101 years old at the time, and they had a lovely visit recalling old times.
Mr Bernier enjoyed good health and walked down town every day, weather permitting. He was ill only a short time before his death, which occurred at the Sheldon hospital June 27, 1961.
Mr Bernier was preceded in death by his nine brothers and sisters and one daughter Lena, Mrs Eric Roth.
Survivors includes his widow and children Arthur, Everly; Edmond, Coon Rapids, Minnesota; Delima, Mrs W E Phillips, Lompoc, California; William, Inkom, Idaho; Delia, Mrs Harold Kizer, Milford; Louie, Maine; Mrs Anne Rice, Marion, Ohio; Laura Bernier, Hartley. Also 19 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.
All of the children were home for the services except William, Delima and Louie.
Relatives from a distance attending the services included Mr and Mrs Edmond Proulx, Mrs Emily Marier, F Joseph Marier, Hugo, Minnesota; Mr and Mrs Antoine Proulx, Mr and Mrs Louie Proulx, St Paul, Minnesota; Mrs James McIntire, Charles City; Mrs Roland Loehr, Mooreland, Iowa; Mr and Mrs Robert Esser, Milford; Mr and Mrs Robert Walters, Milford; Mr and Mrs Francis Lynn, Spirit Lake; Mr and Mrs Edward Bernier, Phoenix, Arizona; Mr and Mrs LeRoy Bernier, Everly; Eric Roth and Timothy and David, Hartley; Mr and Mrs Jerome Roth, Hartley; Charles Hoffman, Sibley; Mr and Mrs Edward Braun, Sibley; Mr and Mrs Herman Hodapp, Sioux City; Mr and Mrs Richard Hoffman, Hartley; Mr and Mrs Frank Hoffman and family, Mr and Mrs George Hoffman, Mr and Mrs Clarence Hoffman and family, Melvin.
