John Harry Hardt Sr., 92, of Quemado died on Dec. 31, 2017, at his residence on Hardt Farms.

He was born on May 29, 1925, three miles west of Uvalde, to Alice Grace Robinson and Lee Albert Hardt. He was the grandson of Sheriff Harry Robinson of Maverick County, and the great-grandson of Judge Frank Robinson of Uvalde County.

The family moved to Eagle Pass where they resided on the grandparent’s dairy farm. Hardt attended school there, where he played high school football and was involved in the National FFA Organization, then known as Future Farmers of America. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served on the USS San Diego until the surrender of Japan in 1945.

He married Johnnie Mae Akin in 1959 in Eagle Pass. With the marriage the couple joined their combined four children into one household. Later the couple added three more children to the family.

Hardt worked in Mexico during the hoof and mouth outbreak in 1947; for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 1962, during the screwworm eradication era; owned a caliche business; worked for Fletcher Butane Service in Eagle Pass; and worked as a plant manager for TeXan Energy Propane Eagle Pass alongside his wife, before retiring.

After retiring, he enjoyed traveling and visiting the children. A lifelong rancher, in 1999, he moved to the farm in Quemado, where he managed cattle and ran hay and pecan operations. Hardt enjoyed taking the children and grandchildren fishing. They also helped check cattle, and he supported them in sports, 4-H and FFA activities. He was a member of the Word of Life Church in Eagle Pass. The family says he loved his family with all his might and was always there when he was needed.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; one sister, Ann Eve (Hardt) Nesbit; and one granddaughter, Melissa Lee Hardt.
