Melvin Francis Janis of Bridgeton (St. Louis County), Missouri, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 5, 2020 at the age 88 years, 9 months and 24 days. He was born on Wednesday, August 12, 1931 in Greenville, Missouri, the youngest of nine children born to Edward C. and Frances Jane (Gibbons) Janis. He grew up in southeastern Missouri and married the love of his life, Marie Tucker on June 29, 1952. They were blessed with 66 years of marriage when she was called home on October 1, 2018.

He is survived by his three children, Deborah Durso, married to Kevin Durso of Cottleville, Missouri, Judy Charlton, married to Rick Charlton of Sebring, Florida and Wayne Janis, married to Deanna (nee Ives) Janis of Cottleville, Missouri; nine grandchildren, Ryan Durso, married to Kristy, Michael Durso, Andrea Duncan, married to Tom, Brent Charlton, Katie Kennedy, married to Ryan, Danny Janis, Drew Janis, Karin Lynn Ford, married to Vanessa, and Aly Janis; thirteen great-grandchildren, Davelyn, Reese, Timothy, Olivia, John, Finn, Lincoln, Gabriel, Gracelyn, Parker, Memphis, Kaleb and Kori; one sister, Flora Jo. He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; and eight siblings, Beaula, Harold, Helen, Carl, Dorothy, Clyde, and infant Marion.

Mel honorably served our country for two years in the Army as a company clerk stationed in Korea. He worked as a barber for most of his life, owning and operating a very successful barber shop in Clayton, Missouri for over 50 years. He and his family moved from St. Louis City into a new home in Bridgeton, Missouri, in 1962 and lived there until he entered Twin Oaks Assisted Living in August 2019. He was an avid fisherman, as well as a deer and turkey hunter. He was a champion turkey caller and served as a judge in many turkey calling contests.

He came to faith in Christ as a young man and dedicated his life to serving God and His church. He was a long time and faithful member of Fee Fee Baptist Church in Bridgeton. He also had a beautiful voice and was singing hymns up to the day before he died. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Services: Mel's service and burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery will be scheduled when the gathering restrictions are lifted.
