Mrs. Maxine Strickland Simmons, 75, of Blackshear, passed away late Sunday evening, June 21, 2020, at the Hospice Satilla Hospice House.
Born in Waycross, GA on February 19, 1945, she had lived in Pierce County all of her life. Mrs. Simmons had owned and operated several businesses over the years including Maxine & Sons and Trash to Treasures. She has the distinction of being the original creator of the Pierce County Bears “Bear Paw” emblem and was, without question, a hard working woman. Mrs. Simmons enjoyed going to garage sales auctions over the years and attended Emmanuel Baptist Church.
She was a daughter of the late Allen Lewis & Laura Artha Crawford Strickland, Sr. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Madyson Neil; and by a sister, Violet Roberson.
Survivors include her husband of 21 years, Jimmy Simmons of Blackshear; three daughters, Karen Walker of Alma, Georgia Simmons of Houma, LA, and Susan (Chris) Clough of Blackshear; five sons, Kevin (Kathy) Cobb of Savannah, Timmy Chancey (Sarah Schlumbrecht) and Karl (Tonya) Chancey all of Blackshear, and Donald (DeDe) Hersey and James (Michelle) Simmons all of Houma, LA; four sisters, Evelyn (Joe) Rankin of Hoboken, Brenda Strickland of Blackshear, Roxanne Strickland of Clarksville, VA, and Precious Melinda Strickland of Skipwith, VA; two brothers, Allen (Lawana) Strickland, Jr. and Earl Strickland all of Blackshear; 19 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren with one more on the way; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Funeral services for Mrs. Simmons will be held Thursday morning, June 25, 2020, at 11:00 o’clock from the Pearson-Dial Chapel.
Memorialization will be by cremation.
Visitation for Mrs. Simmons will be held at the funeral home chapel one hour prior to the service.
