Joyce L. Barefoot, 75, of Utica, passed away August 23, 2007 at Faxton-St. Luke's Healthcare after a long illness with her loving family by her side. Joyce was born on May 3, 1932 in Yonkers, NY, the daughter of the late John and Ola Hawks Maxwell, and received her education in the Yonkers schools. She was united in marriage to the late James R. Barefoot on April 21, 1956 in Yonkers at St. John's Episcopal Church. The couple had resided here since 1976. Joyce was a secretary with the ABC Fire Extinguisher Company in Utica and a former member of St. John's Church in Yonkers. She dedicated her life to her beloved family, and was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother above all. She was an avid baker, chef, nature lover and bird watcher, especially interested in cardinals. Surviving Joyce are one daughter, Karen J. Pontrelli of Kennett Square, PA; two sons and daughters-in-law, James K. and his wife, Kathryn of Sauquoit, Kevin C. and his wife, Michele of Whitesboro; ten grandchildren, Michael, Dana, Gregory, Candice, Sara, John, Kevin, Nicholas, Daniel and Ian; two great-grandchildren, Elicia and Nautika; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two brothers, Richard Maxwell and his wife, Donna of New Jersey, Bruce (Bootsie) Maxwell and his wife, Marylin of Ohio; five sisters-in-law, Linda and Eileen Maxwell of Florida, Pheobe Watson and her husband, Charles, Patsy Lee and Jackie Johnson; three brothers-in-law, J.D. Barefoot and his wife, Ann, Kenneth Barefoot and his wife, Linda, and Joe West; and her lifelong friends, Gloria, Hazel and Don, Carol and loving friend, Susan. She was predeceased by her three brothers, Harold Maxwell and his wife, Alice, Jack Maxwell and Donald Maxwell; son-in-law, Gino Warren Pontrelli; and sister-in-law, Jean West. Joyce's funeral service will commence on Monday at 11:00 a.m. from the Surridge & Roberts Funeral Homes, 470 French Rd., Utica, with the Reverend Sarah V. Lewis officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-8 p.m. Interment will be at Crown Hill Memorial Park, Kirkland.
