Jane was born in Harrison County, Kentucky, the oldest daughter of Thomas and Rosanna (McElhaney) Newell. By 1820 the family had moved to Logan County, Ohio where Jane married James M. Barker on Dec. 18, 1833. Two daughters were born there, Maranda and Rosanna. About 1840 the family moved to Louisa County, Iowa and settled on a farm next to Jane's brothers, Felix and Thomas Newell.
