KANNAPOLIS - Mr. Clarence Grant Lawson, 80, died Friday Aug. 24, 2007 at his home after being in declining health for a year. There will be a graveside service 4 p.m. Sunday at Carolina Memorial Park, with military rites by the DAV Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Navy. The family will receive friends at the graveside prior to the service. Mr. Lawson was born Oct. 22, 1926, in Rowan County, the son of the late John Calvin Lawson, who died in 1927, and the late Annie Arthurs Lawson, who died in 1928. In earlier years, he was a U.S. Navy veteran having served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre during World War II. After the war, he was active with the Civil Air Patrol for a period of time. He worked for Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1 as an order coordinator in towel packaging for many years until his retirement. He was a member of Cannon Memorial Masonic Lodge 626 and also a member of the American Legion Post 115 and the V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989. He was known by his family as a total Atlanta Braves baseball fan. Mr. Lawson was preceded in death by his wife, Dorcas Gantt Lawson, who died June 24, 2000. They had two children, a son and a daugter who survive. He is also preceded in death by the aunt who raised him, Nell Arthurs Hess.
