Loval was born the youngest of 7 children in poor, rural Mississippi on February 26, 1926 to William Van and Willie Ann (Pannell) Akins. He was named after Dr Mayes who arrived shortly after his home birth. His Daddy was a small farmer and his mom cared for home and children, 2 of whom were handicapped and could not help with the farm. Times were lean and everyone worked hard.

Always big for his age (6'4" in his teens), he "ran off" to join the Marine Corps in 1944. He did his boot camp at Camp Pendleton, CA then was sent for extended training on the Big Island of Hawaii with the 28th Regiment of the 5th Marine Division. They were loaded onboard ships in Pearl Harbor ready to go to battle. They were told a few days before the invasion, their destination was Iwo Jima. His Regiment was the one that raised the US flag on Iwo Jima after capturing Mt Suribachi. He and his foxhole buddy came through the bloodiest of any campaign during WWII without any wounds. From Iwo Jima they were sent back for further training to invade Japan. At sea they were told about the atomic bombs being dropped on a Japan. They were off the coast of Japan for a few days and then were among the first US Marines to occupy Japan.

He was discharged from the Marines in 1946 and re-enlisted in 1948. He served on a ship off the coast of China providing protection for the oil fields of China and to keep it out of the hands of the invading Chinese Communists, but to no avail.

He was in Adak, Alaska when North Korea invaded South Korea. He served 2 tours of duty in South Vietnam Nam. Additional duty stations were back at Camp Pendleton, San Diego, Bangor, Washington, El Paso.

He retired with 30 years of active duty in the Marine Corps as a Sgt Major in 1975 in El Paso, Texas. He met his equal in Nina Ray Allen, a cute single neighbor. Nina was a retired Army Nurse Anesthetist and a Lieutenant Colonel. They enjoyed her bowling league, traveling to Las Vegas and Laughlin to gamble and cross country trips to visit relatives.
