BISHOP JOSEPH A. SCHWARTZ, 81, DIES ON SUNDAY

Rites Tuesday for Widely Known Man; Leaves 190 Grandchildren

Rev. Joseph A. Schwartz, 81, for many years Bishop of the Old Order Amish Church of this community, died at 11:25 a.m. Sunday at his farm home three and a half miles north of Berne, along U.S. Highway 27. Mr. Schwartz, one of the most prominent men of this community, died after an illness of a little more than one week. His condition had been critical for several days. He had failed during the last several days. (Missing)

Schwartz was also widely known as a beekeeper and many of his friends knew him affectionately as "Honey (missing)

In addition to the widow, a daughter, Mrs. Peter Hilty, and the following brothers and sisters preceded in death: John, Mrs. Rosina Habegger, Anna, Mrs. Aaron Zook, Christian, Joel, Benjamin, Mrs. Emily Eicher and an unnamed daughter.

The body was brought to the Yager Mortuary and was removed to the home this morning. Funeral services will be held at home at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday and burial will be in the Schwartz Cemetery north of Berne.

State police have been asked to aid county officials in controlling traffic during funeral hours.
