Daughter of William and Frances (Levan) Schmidt, Isabelle grew up in Dixon, Illinois. Valedictorian of her high school class at Dixon High School, she went on to attend Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa and the University of St. Francis, in Chicago, Illinois, graduating with a degree in nursing. She later earned her Nursing Education Certification from Loyola University in Evanston, Illinois. She was a nursing instructor for 35 years at St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing in Marshfield, Wisconsin.
