Josiah married Elizabeth Sarah Jane Martin on 24 August 1862. Soon after their daughter, Sarah Jane (Jennie) Baker, was born on 18 August 1863, Josiah enlisted to be in the Civil War. He was captured by the South and imprisoned in Baltimore. At the end of the war, he was freed, only to die from disease while still in Maryland. The war officially ended a few weeks later. Wife and daughter later moved to Iowa.

BAKER, JOSIAH.—Age, 25 years. Enlisted, December 22, 1863, at Whitestown; mustered in as private, Co. M, January 4, 1864, to serve three years; captured, November 1, 1861; paroled prisoner, March 16, 1865, at Annapolis, Md.; died of disease, March 31, 1865, at Baltimore, Md.
