Born at Russell Cave in Fayette Co. Ky, son of Wm. McMurtry
(served in War of 1812 and died 1816) & Rebecca Hogan.
Pinckney was apprenticed at the age of 19 to his uncle for 7 yrs. to learn the tanner's trade.
Although he had but meagre educational advantages, he was a fine mathematician and was everywhere recognized as an upright, honest man, one whose word was as good as his bond. In 1837 he established a tan yard which he operated for ten years in Cynthiana which he sold and built another tan yard in Colemansville, Harrison Co. he sold that and moved to Grant Co. and engaged in general farming. He was a Whig in politics until after the Civil War, when he became identified with the Democratic Party.
Married Nancy McMurtry and had two sons, Wm and Joseph.
