Death of Mrs. W.M. Winters:

On January 23, 1909, Mary Atherton, relict of the late Capt. W. M. Winters, passed to her great reward. She was a daughter of Captain and Mrs. Thomas Owen, of Macon County, and was born July 18, 1838. In the spring of '58, she was married to Mr. Winters. There still survive, her four children, W.T. Winters, R.A. Winters, Mrs. A.A. Conley, Mrs. J.D. Alexander. On the 24th Inst. she was buried at Oak Hill Church, in sight of which she spent her married life. Her pastor, Rev. Sherrill, assisted by Rev. D. Monroe conducted the services.

Often, often, have I been at that sweet country home and enjoyed its warm welcome, its genuine gentle hospitality. It was a home of thrift, of great cleanliness, of pure thought, of religious loyalty. Mrs. Winters ever "looked well to the ways of the household". Kind hearted, unselfish, devoted to her husband and her children, she was specially happy when her preacher called to take a meal. Perhaps she has fed more preachers than any woman in Burke. And not only preachers, but her friends, her husbands friends and even the strangers within her gates were gladly received at her ever bounteous table. Refined in taste and sentiment, she was fond of reading and enjoyed a funny story. At the age of fourteen, she connected herself with the Methodist church and no woman was ever more loyal to her creed. Her life was a labor of love for her loved ones, an earnest struggle to enlarge the Kingdom of the Master among her neighbors. Far removed from the glare and the glitter of the "worldly life" surrounded by babbling brooks, wooded hills and solemn stars, she was a sweet evangel of a higher and holier faith. An uncrowned heroine in this life struggle, her example was a blessing to us all who knew her and eloquent of Him whose weary feet and pierced hands made sacred the slopes of Calvary.
