James M. Marshall, Jr. was born at Moreland, Fauquier County, VA to James Markham "Polk" Marshall (1844-1914) and Alice B. (Poindexter) Marshall (1850-1889). His mother died shortly after his birth. He was raised by his step-mother, Alice Gray (Jones) Marshall (d. 1939). In 1913 he married Jennie Louise Sulfridge in Bell County, KY, and they had three children; Jack Bernard (1913-1989), James Markham (1915-1972), and Betty Jean (1924-1992). They lived in West Virginia for a time, and Detroit, MI, and before WWII came to Florida and established a camp-ground and trailer park, called "Southland Trailer Camp" on Missouri Avenue a mile south of Largo, FL. James M. died of a heart attack there in 1941. His remains were cremated.
His widow Jennie later married Mr. Charles Adam Gribbie (1889-1960) a New Jersey native, and veteran of the US Navy in WWI.
