James Wilborn Allison was born April 1, 1830 to Robert Asbury Allison and Nancy Jane (Thaxton) Allison. He married Martha Hamilton (daughter of David Porter Hamilton and Sibella T. (Griffin) Hamilton) on July 2, 1853 in Gibson County, Tennessee.

James and Martha had 5 children: Joseph Porter Allison, James Allison, Jefferson Davis Allison, Prudence Allison and Isabella Allison.

James enlisted in the Civil War and lost his life on September 1, 1864. He is buried in an unmarked grave near Dalton, Georgia.

According to the Arkansas, Confederate Pension Records, 1891-1935, James served from the State of Tennessee. It also states:

Regiment: Newton
Death Date: September 1864

Martha Allison (James' widow), applied for the pension in 1893 from her residence in Newton, Arkansas.
