In the early 1870s, not too long after his mother's death in 1869, John left on horseback for Texas. He may have planned to join his cousin, John Alexander Boney, in Bell County who also went there in the 1870s. John Jefferson got about as far as Marshall TX. He died there, and both his father and brother recorded his death in their respective Bibles. He left no spouse or offspring.
