Clara Arizona Irwin was the first daughter born into a large farming family in rural central Texas. Her grandparents had migrated to Texas from Georgia and Tennessee. When she was a young girl in 1889, her family moved to Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory when it was opened for white settlement. Her father was Franklin Jefferson Irwin (1853 Robertson County,Texas—1908 Oklahoma) and her mother was Demaris Holton Irwin (1858 Georgia—1939 Oklahoma). Clara married William Riley Sutterfield (1878 Arkansas/Oklahoma —1968 Greens Bayou, Harris County, Texas) on November 4,1900 in Pottawatomie, Oklahoma.

Bill Sutterfield was the last son of a Missouri farmer who had served in the Civil War. Bill's parents were James Marion Sutterfield (1839 Missouri–1891Oklahoma) and Margaret Lavina Bradshaw Sutterfield (1837 Missouri–1925 Baytown, Texas). His parents farmed in Missouri, Iowa, then Arkansas and finally Oklahoma. By Bill's early childhood, his family lived in Indian Territory, Oklahoma. He finished 6th grade, and his father died when he was 13. After Clara and Bill married, they had two daughters born in Ada, Oklahoma, and then they slowly moved toward the Texas coast. One son was born in Big Spring, Texas and by 1908, Bill's family lived in Matargorda County, Texas. He became a boatman and fisherman. In the 1910 Census, several of Bill's kin lived in Matagorda as well.

Clara had several babies in Matagorda who did not survive, but in 1915, their son Lloyd W. Sutterfield was born there. They moved to Morgan's Point where their last child Pansy was born in 1919. The city of La Porte offered Bill the ferry concession at Morgan's Point to Baytown, and he used his own vessels to operate it. By the 1930 census, Clara lived alone in Morgan's Point. She listed herself as a widow though Bill had remarried. Clara owned her own modest home until about 1935. She later remarried a William T. Jones, a painter and repairman and lived with him in Green's Bayou in 1940. Many Sutterfield relatives lived nearby. Clara died at age 61 at Memorial Hospital in Houston and her address at the time was in Green's Bayou.

Bill Sutterfield remarried, and in 1940, he lived in Green's Bayou with his second wife, Minnie Mae (born 1880 in Illinois) and worked as a boat builder. His sons Johnny and Lloyd and various relatives also lived in Greens Bayou Park near him. He was a well-regarded boat captain and ran a store. He died in hospital in 1968 at age 90 . His last residence was in Greens Bayou. He was buried in Palacios Cemetery.
