John William Strode LANDER married (1) Mary Pryer BENNETT (2) Mary Jane BLAKELEY. JOHN STRODE LANDER, Jr., was born in Christian County, Kentucky, June 5, 1830. He was reared on the farm and stayed with it all his life, and enjoyed a fair degree of prosperity. He married MARY BENNETT, November 5, 1848. A little figuring reveals the fact that he was then but 18 years and 5 months. His uncle, JEREMIAH F. LANDER, entered into matrimony when he was but 17 years, 10 months and 8 days old.

JOHN and MARY had a daughter named ALICE, who, from all accounts, was a peculiar child and perhaps unusually willful. The schoolmistress got out of patience with her one day and gave her a severe beating. It was the scandal of the neighborhood, caused much ugly talk and resulted in a tragedy, over which we draw the veil of charity. [Rev. David Lander, History of the Lander Family of Virginia and Kentucky]
