John Burton Norman was born in Gothenburg, Sweden on November 27, 1845. His parents were Magnus and Martha Johnson. He left home in 1868 and came to America. In May of that year, he was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He spent a couple of years working at various jobs, and in 1872, he went back to Sweden for a visit. When he came back to Minneapolis, he brought his fiance with him. John married Carrie Swenson in Minneapolis on June 12, 1973. They lived at 619 North Second Street while John spent several years as a brick maker, and Carrie had two children.

On April 11, 1879, John was hired by the Minneapolis Police Department. He was promoted to sergeant in 1886. They were still living on Second Street and they had three more children. In 1900, after having twins in 1895, they moved to a bigger home at 2401 Lyndale Avenue North. In 1901, John was promoted to Lieutenant. He kept that position until he retired in 1906, after 27 years with the department. John died in Minneapolis on February 2, 1928, and Carried died on February 11, 1931. Both John and Carrie were buried at Crystal Lake Cemetery in north Minneapolis.
