John Malcolmson Curtis was born in Brunswick, Maine on July 25, 1858 to Captain John Curtis and Letitia Ann Bammer. He was named for his father's maritime business partner, John Malcolmson. Malcolm grew up in Brunswick but spent part of his youth sailing with his father. Unfortunately, his father died just before Malcolm's 12th birthday. In 1882 Malcolm graduated from Bowdoin College. He held a variety of jobs mostly in the New York City area. Malcolm died in Manhatten on July 5, 1910.
