Obituary from the Pine River, Minnesota, newspaper shortly after his death:
J.R. Kinler, a pioneer of Cass County and post master of Pine River for seven years, sometime during Monday night answered the last call, succumbing to heart failure without any warning that the dark angel of death was near.
He had not been feeling well the past three weeks but was almost himself again and was about town Monday. He made no complaint before retiring and when it was discovered, in the morning the his spirit had flown, the shock all but prostrated the family.
The funeral was held yesterday at 1:30 N. E. Church, Rev. W. H. Bunting conducting the last sad rites and the remains of the sturdy old gentleman, whom all liked and respected, was laid to rest in Pine Ridge cemetery.
James Robert Kinler was born near Toronto, Ont., on March 19, 1845, and at the time of his death he was 63 years, nine months and sixteen days old.
He came to Pine River in 1895.
He leaves to mourn his departure, three grown children, one in Brooklyn and two in New Ontario by his first wife, besides Mrs. Kinler and seven children here, which include, Robert, Libby, Rachel, Susan, and Ruth, Mrs. Geo. J. Silk and little "Bill."
The sympathy of all is with the bereaved ones in their darkest hour.
