Cheryl passed away on March 21, 2020 peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Cheryl was born on September 1, 1952 in Beech Grove to Martha & Bill Payne. Cheryl was raised by Martha & Robert Turner. She married William Kirby Smith in 1971, her husband of 29 years.

She is survived by her children, William Clinton Smith of Wilkinson & Kelly Smith of Indianapolis. Cheryl was also "Grammy" to Ashlynn Smith, Isiah Ford, Clay Smith, Carson Smith, & Colten Smith. Other survivors include her mother, Martha Turner; sisters, Cindy Payne, Cathy Owens, & Carla Horrigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kirby; and father, Robert Turner.

Cheryl graduated from Eastern Hancock in 1970. She attended cosmetology school in Indianapolis. She was a hairdresser for many years before motherhood. Once Cheryl became a mother, she stayed home with her children. Cheryl then worked for Smith Implements for 35 years, where she loved working with the employees and customers. Cheryl was known as the "Mother Hen" at work and prided herself on being a mother to many. She took care of her work family and customers just like she took care of her family.

Cheryl had many passions and interests. She loved to travel with friends, tending her flower garden, but her biggest passion was her family. She loved attending her grandchildren's sporting events and watching them show pigs at the Hancock County 4-H Fair.

A Celebration of Cheryl's life will be held at a later date due to COVID-19.

Graveside Services will be held for family and close friends on Wednesday March 25, at Grove Lawn Cemetery in Pendleton.
