"In greatful and loving memory, President of the Michigan Agricultural College from 1862 to 1884 (renamed Michigan State College in 1923). This monument and tablet are placed here over his mortal remains by his devoted friends and students in token of their undying affection, gratitude and reverence. A prophet in education who builded even better than he knew by puting science at work for the welfare of man. He was a leader in scholarship, possessed of a gentle spirit, and a working faith in the power of sympathy and love."Biographical Information listed under Theophilus Abbott. "Note that the clipping I added gives death as 31 October, 1892. I didn't change it in the suggestion since I don't know where you got your date. I just suggested the birth place and death place based on the clipping."
