Harry was born in Elkhart, TX to Christopher Columbus "Lum" and Maggie Ann Gammage. His parents are buried in Garden of Memories. He was a farmer. He and his brother, Dave Arlon Gammage, drowned in the Trinity River near Hall's Bluff in Houston Co, TX after they fell from their boat while adjusting their fishing nets.

Harry is buried beside his wife, Ardell Luce Gammage Head, and her second husband, Verbon Head. He was survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Ina Dale Ford of Limestone, Maine, and Mrs. Billie Bridges of Elkhart; and six grandchildren; two brother, Charlie Gammage of Houston and Clyde Gammage of Morgan City, Louisiana; and three sisters, Ellna McClinton of Kennard, Nellie Burrows and Winnie Maris, both of Houston. His obituary appeared in the Palestine (TX) Herald-Press, Tuesday, 24 February 1958. Harry and Ardell's daughter Ina Dell Gammage Ford, is also buried in Garden of Memories.
