Jean, as she preferred to be called, grew up on a farm just outside of Waverly. She attended a country school just a 1/4 mile from her farm home and was a 1946 graduate of Waverly High school. After graduation, she moved to Lawrence Kansas. Here she lived with her sister Margie and worked that first year at the Bell Telephone company as an operator. She then started attending the University of Kansas where she met her future husband, Lyle and the rest is history. Jean was united in marriage to Lyle H. Rath on January 31, 1949, in the Danforth Chapel on the University campus. They celebrated nearly 63 years of marriage before Lyle's passing on December 5, 2011. To this union two sons were born 2 sons.
A business opportunity brought the Rath's to Stover in November of 1949 when they decided to purchased the Stover Telephone Company. While Lyle took care of the company, Jean was a homemaker and a great mom to her two sons.
Her greatest enjoyment came from the time she could spend with her family.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; , four grandsons,six great grandchildren, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband Lyle, and by her parents, Nolen and Percie Calvert. Grandson, Shawn H. Rath, and five siblings, Hollis Calvert, Irvin Calvert, Margie Swain Taylor, Donald Calvert and Pat Deines.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, at the Scrivner-Morrow Funeral Home in Stover.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 20 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Stover with Pastor Gerald Kurka officiating. Interment will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery in Stover.
