Hays -- Richard "Dick" Snook, 70, died March 2, 1991 at his home. He was born Aug. 1, 1920 at Topeka, the son of Walters and Mabel Gilman Snook.

He was owner and operator of the Natoma-Lurary Independent newspaper for 8 years and was employed at Job Services for Plainville and Hays. He was a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church, the fourth degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 10044 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all of Hays and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He married Marie Kass Jan. 27, 1940 at Topeka. She died in November, 1963. He later married Mildred Westhusin on Aug. 14, 1964 at Plainville. She survives.

Other survivors include four sons, Gerald of Baltimore, Richard Jr. of Russell, Thomas of Hawaii, and Steve of Boonville; three daughters, Janet Havlas of Holdridge, Neb., Renee Maday of Overland Park, and Judy Murphy of Natoma; a brother, Robert of McLouth; 18 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Parish services vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. today, followed by a Knights of Columbus vigil service at 8 p.m., both at Hays Memorial Chapel in Hays. Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church, with Father Dan Scheetz presiding. Friends may call from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.

Memorials may be sent to the church or to Hospice of St. Anthony's Hospital, both in care of the funeral chapel.
