James Bailey Magruder came to Florida with his father, C. B. Magruder, about 1870 from Georgia. The Magruders settled on the east coast at Rockledge.

At 15, he was operating the first trading post on the Indian River. He moved from Sanford to Orlando in 1900 and became one of Orlando's most prolific builders and boosters. Mr. Magruder dealt in horses, wagons, harnesses, lumber, and citrus grove properties.

Mr. Magruder married Carrie Josephine Telford of Sanford, the daughter of Rev. William B. Telford, a beloved early pastor of Presbyterian churches.
