Alva Astin was a hard working railroad man. I have always heard that he had begun working for the Central of Georgia Railroad in Atlanta as a teen. Along the way, he had fibbed about his age to be promoted through the ranks, finally achieving the position of Engineer, or driver of the train. For awhile he engineered the Nancy Hanks on her Atlanta-Savannah run.

Everyone called A.C. Astin "Pappy" for as long as I remember, and well before my arrival in 1959, since I was one of the youngest grandchildren. As I heard it, Pappy worked for the railroad for 50 years, retiring during the mid 1960's. By that time, he was a quiet man who in his later years mostly sat at home and watched baseball on TV.

Pappy passed away at 80 years of age. After his funeral, my mother told me of an old, stooped gentleman who had stopped by the funeral home to pay his respects. He had said, "I wanted to see Kid (Pappy's nickname from his railroad days) just one more time."
