Groce Banks is the son of William M "Bill" Banks and Lovada R Metcalf of Paint Gap, Yancey County, NC, later of Asheville, Buncombe County, NC. Bill and Lovada at one time were the owners and operators of the "red store" which still stands at the intersection of Indian Creek and Horton Creek at Paint Gap.

After Groce's wife Ethel Prudence Hensley Banks was shot and killed by her own father, Gilbert (or Grover) Bryce Hensley, in front of the "red store", Bryce left Yancey County and moved to the West Asheville section of Buncombe County, NC, where he later married Ruth Ella Hayes (1915-1945). By this marriage he was the father of Benson Gregory Banks (1932-2005).
