Thomas D'Alesandro served as the 43rd mayor of Baltimore City from 1967-1971. As Baltimore City Council President he worked closely with then Mayor Theodore McKeldin to eliminate racial barriers in employment, education and other areas.

Thomas III is the oldest of six children. His sister Nancy Pelosi was the first female speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. His father Thomas D'Alesandro Jr. also served as the mayor of Baltimore from 1947-1959.

Thomas was a graduate of Loyola College in Baltimore and the University of Maryland law school. He married Margie Piracci in 1952 and they had five children.
