A native of Atlanta, GA, Thomas graduated from an Atlanta area high school in 1907, and enlisted in the Georgia National Guard in APR 1908.

Veteran of the Battle of Cantigny (28 MAY 1918) - the first American offensive of World War I, as well as the Aisne-Marne Offensive & Argonne Offensive as a member of the 1st Division.
